Styleforum Maker Space – I Sarti Italiani

i sarti italiani bespoke suits abiti su misura sicilia sicily

While Neapolitan, Milanese, and even Roman tailors are world-famous and respected, we can’t possibly ignore the fact that tailoring schools flourish all over Italy – even on the southern island of Sicily.

I Sarti Italiani has been making bespoke suits, trousers, and shirts since 1986; they focus on precise, careful stitching, and they only use the best quality materials for their suits. The lining is always cupro bemberg, the buttons are either corozo, horn or mother of pearl, and the canvas is in camel hair or horse hair.

The selection of fabrics is on point: Ermenegildo Zegna, Loro Piana, Cerruti 1881, Draper’s, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Bottoli, Larusmiani, and Scabal are only few of the names you’ll find in I Sarti Italiani’s fabric book.

i sarti italiani palermo styleforum maker space quality

Sicilian tailoring features the same, relaxed characteristic of Neapolitan tailoring, without the flairs typical of the Partenopean tradition. I Sarti Italiani offers bespoke solutions and blends Italian craftsmanship with unique Southern taste. Our very own Peter Zottolo has recently written an article about his recent experience with I Sarti Italiani in occasion of a recent trip to Italy.

You can find I Sarti Italiani in Sicily at these locations – but they also do a home or office bespoke service for those who are too busy to stop by the showroom:

Styleforum Maker Space – a.b.k. Leather Products

This January, at Pitti Uomo 93 in Florence, Italy, Styleforum will be hosting its inaugural Maker Space. The Styleforum Maker Space is an open space designed to exhibit the work of small brands and artisans interested in showing to both wholesale buyers and retail consumers. Click on the banner to visit the official page of the event and RSVP as a visitor.

Alya began her career by taking classes in shoemaking, eventually finding a mentor in iconic sandal designer, Barbara Shaum.

Inspired by her experience, Alya began making shoes on her own, recruiting occasional help from her sister Katya and teaching her the craft along the way. Word began to spread, orders for shoes began to increase, and the business was born.

Their work has become known for impeccable craftsmanship, expanding well beyond shoes to leather items of all kinds, from the functional to the purely beautiful. Each piece starts with leather that is domestically sourced and tanned without chemicals.

Katya and Alya hand-dye their own leather to achieve the exact color palette desired, then use alcohol water to saturate and stretch it before hand-stitching or stapling the pieces into place to dry.

At the Styleforum Maker Space, you’ll be able to chat with Alya and see her at work. Click here to RSVP, and visit the Styleforum Maker Space Official Thread on the forum.

The 2017 Styleforum Charity Auctions Are Here!

Styleforum charity auctions ronald mcdonald house charity auctions

We are very proud to present this year’s edition of the Styleforum Charity Auctions, this year in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane.

Of all the many traditions we all have, this is the one of which I am most proud. We are holding auctions of items donated by retailers and designers, and 100% of the proceeds to go to the Ronald McDonald House, which helps to house and feed the families of children who must travel for medical treatment. During the holiday season, illness and being away from the comfort of home is especially stressful, and I love that we can help, in a small way, to alleviate some of this stress.

This is our 15 Year Anniversary, and we’d like add to the over $60K donated to charity since the auctions started four years ago! Please subscribe to the thread to keep updated on the daily, 24-hour auctions, and please bid often and generously.

  • Each auction will take 24 hours, starting as close to 10 a.m. PST as I am able to make it, and ending the same time the next day, or 10 minutes after the final bid, whichever comes later.
  • All auctions will start at 50% of the retail price.

If you are a vendor and would like to donate an item for the charity, please email us at [email protected]

Introducing the Styleforum Maker Space in Florence, Italy

What is the Styleforum Maker Space?

This January, at Pitti Uomo 93 in Florence, Italy, Styleforum will be hosting its inaugural Maker Space. The Styleforum Maker Space is an open space designed to showcase the work of small brands and artisans interested in showing to both wholesale buyers and retail consumers. It is a combination pop-up shop and wholesale space, geared towards exhibiting fantastic small brands and makers to Pitti’s influential and knowledgable visitors.

Many vendors, buyers, and visitors to Pitti Uomo are interested not just in wholesaling their wares or purchasing for stores, but also in taking the opportunity to shop for themselves. Our space offers small brands and makers a location in which to demonstrate their craft, showroom to wholesale customers, and sell immediately to attendees should they choose to do so.

If you are attending Pitti Uomo, we invite you to visit the Styleforum Maker Space!

styleforum maker space 2018 pitti uomo 93

Where to find the Maker Space:

We will be housed in a very large (260m2) apartment with a substantial space for greeting and showing to clients and influencers. The location in the heart of Florence offers both a central location and a comfortable counterpoint to the crowds of Pitti Uomo.

When we’ll be there:

January 9-11 2018, during Pitti Uomo 93.

Who’s invited:

Any attendee invited by a vendor or carrying a Pitti Uomo badge will be welcome inside the Maker Space.

What we offer:

For vendors, we offer a beautiful space in which to showcase your craft and goods for wholesale buyers and retail consumers alike.

Coffee, aperitivo, and wine will be served.

Vendor Contact:

If you are an interested vendor, please contact Styleforum at [email protected] with the subject line: Styleforum Maker Space 2018

The Proper Kit is Live! Join us Saturday, November 5th

The Proper Kit is live this Saturday, November 5th! We’ll be at Gary’s Loft in New York City from 10:30AM to 6:30 PM, showcasing 14 world-class vendors of fine men’s clothing, shoes, and accessories. We’ll also have a special IW Harper bourbon bar, where you can treat yourself to a tipple (or two – it’s a party, after all).

The proper kit is live

Beyond the beautiful goods, you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with friends you haven’t made yet. This is a celebration of our shared passions, and it would be a shame not to share them in person. Plus, several of our vendors will be offering Proper Kit specials to all guests, so if there’s something that catches your eye – well, you know the drill.

As sad as it makes us (and you), we know that some of our readers won’t be able to make it to the show. So, on Saturday, we’ll be doing our best to make sure you feel like you’re there in person. Follow along at The Proper Kit’s Facebook page and Instagram profile to see our “live streams” of the event. We’ll be posting photos and videos all day long, so you’ll be able to judge everyone’s outfits second-hand.

Of course, we hope to see you there. If you haven’t, make sure you let us know you’re coming.

RSVP for The Proper Kit!

We’re doing it again. On November 5th, 2016, The Proper Kit will return to Gary’s Loft in New York City, both the Penthouse and 11th floor (28 West 36th St, New York, NY 10018).

For those of you unfamiliar with the idea, this is the yearly trunk show co-hosted by Styleforum and A&H Magazine that unites world-class vendors with you; the friends, fans, and aficionados that make the world of menswear tick.

For those of you who attended last year, you’ll have an idea of what to expect: a group of world-class menswear brands and retailers, setting up shop in a beautiful space that’s devoted solely to you.

Styleforum’s motto has always been “Come for the clothes, stay for the company,” and that’s exactly why you should join us this November. Not only will we have fantastic garments, shoes, and accessories for you to browse, but the real reason you should come is to celebrate our shared passion for style. Some of the best-dressed men on the forum – and in the country – will be visiting; not just forumites, but writers, bloggers, photographers, thinkers, and hobbyists of all strokes. We’ll be discussing our loves (and hates, certainly) over I.W. Harper’s excellent bourbon, some great beer and wine, and tasty food.

As with last year, you’ll have to RSVP to reserve a spot. To do that, follow this link and sign up: https://theproperkit.splashthat.com/

Sartoria Formosa Trunk Show with No Man Walks Alone – Sept. 13-14, NYC

For fans of Neapolitan tailoring, No Man Walks Alone is hosting a Sartoria Formosa trunk show on September 13th and 14th in New York City. According to NMWA proprietor Greg Lellouche,

“Master Tailor Dionisio D’Alise will be conducting fittings for existing customers and take on new bespoke commissions.”

Some appointment slots are still available, especially for Sep 14.  However, note that these opportunities disappear quickly, so if this is an event you’re interested in be sure to email [email protected] for appointments and more information

Sartoria Formosa is a Styleforum favorite, and offers Neapolitan tailoring that is shapely, stylish, and well-made. Here, Styleforum member @In Stitches models his Sartoria Formosa gun club sport coat from No Man Walks Alone:

10 Years of Styleforum–we celebrated in style

On May 4 and May 5, we had a celebration for our 10 year anniversary, at the W San Francisco.  Over 400 people took part in the event, which included a screening of O’Mast, our vendor showcase, and a party.

We kicked it off Friday evening with cocktails and a sneak preview of the next installment of Put This On, a video series by Jesse Thorn about dressing like a grownup, followed by the featured screening of O’Mast, an acclaimed film about Neapolitan tailors and traditions from Gianluca Migliarotti, who traveled from Milan to be with us.  From there, we proceeded to dinner at Credo, in the private dining area, where translucent walls surrounded us with statements of belief from leaders around the world and throughout time. I had the scallops, and I know that they were delicious. The night concluded with port and espresso at The Wingtip, a private club owned by the proprietors of On The Fly, a San Francisco haberdashery which also participated in our vendor showcase the following day.

On Saturday, I was up at 8 a.m. to start setup for the vendor showcase, which started at noon, sharp.  I was nervous about the turnout, but we had a  steady stream of shoppers from the moment we opened the doors.  Fifteen vendors traveled from as far away as Hawaii and New York City.  The range of vendors reflected the diverse readership of Styleforum.  Goorin Brothers, hatmakers, a San Francisco institution whose goods are sold nationwide, brought a large sample of their heritage hats. Greg Walton of Louis Walton, a one man show, demonstrated how his hand makes the ties he sells.  Yuketen, shoemakers and leathermakers, brought their famous outdoor shoes, as well as bags (always sold out, everywhere,) and accessories, from Hermosa Beach.  On the Fly and A Suitable Wardrobe, Bay Area haberdashers who adhere to impeccable standards, brought fine ties, apparel, and gentlemen’s accoutrements; and A Suitable Wardrobe brought a shoeshiner to boot.  Jimmy Au’s for men 5’8″ and Under, from Beverly Hills, brought many suits, shirts,  and jackets to serve men from just below the national average to very much under the average.  Sette ties, from Washington, D.C. showed off substantial sevenfold ties.  Epaulet, from New York City, brought a full range of their own sportscoats, shirts, trousers, and accessories, made in the USA or in Italy, as well as Carmina shoes, for whom they are the sole stockist in North America.  The Brooklyn Circus also brought its brand of urban dandyism from New York City.  The Hanger Project, a business born of Styleforum, from Texas, came with shoe care products and accessories in addition to their signature hangers; local San Francisco retailers Taylor Stitch brought shirts, jeans, and belts; and Revolver, which proprietor Robert Patterson describes as “a little hippy,” featured a DIY scarf dying booth as well as goods from anyone from Yuketen to Reigning Champ to their own line of casual clothing.  Jack Knife Outfitters took measurements for custom jeans; and Joe Hemrajani of Mytailor.com took measurements for custom suits and shirts.  Leathersoul brought an extensive number of Aldens all the way from Honolulu, as well as examples of bespoke shoes from St. Crispin and George Cleverly, rarities anywhere.

As dusk settled, we settled into eating some snacks and having an immoderate number of drinks with a few hundred of our best friends.
